Howard Cosell -- One of a Kind
ABC's broadcast team of Don Meredith, Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford during a Monday Night Football game
Bruce

“I tell it like
it is!”

  by Bruce Macgowan
Acerbic, self-promoting, obnoxious, articulate, pontificating, passionate, humorous: all of these described Howard Cosell, who forever changed how television sports was covered. When he took center stage as the main star in the booth along with former Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback ‘Dandy Don’ Meredith back in 1970, Monday Night Football became an instant ratings bonanza for ABC Television.

Cosell was a lightening rod for criticism, however. While most were entertained by his blustery, theatrical style many hardcore fans HATED Cosell. Sports bars around the country took advantage of this by advertising that not only would they be carrying the Monday Night games but that fans could throw garbage (but no bottles) at cut-out images of Cosell which were placed next to the wide screen TVs carrying the games.

In 1979-80, I was working in Seattle radio for one of the bigger stations, hosting a ‘drive-time’ two hour sports interview show.

In October of 1979, the Seahawks, who had only joined the NFL a few years before, were getting ready to host their first ever Monday Night Football game at the Kingdome.

Because this was a HUGE sports event for Seattle, the general manager at our station wanted to make a ‘splash.’

“I want you to get down to the Olympic Hotel (in downtown Seattle where Cosell and the Monday night crew were staying) track down Cosell and get a one-on-one interview with him,” my boss demanded.

So in mid-morning I drove over to the hotel, parked my car and then walking into the huge lobby of the Olympic, one of the older and more opulent places to stay in Seattle.

Trying to locate Cosell turned out to be no problem at all. He was standing for all to see in the middle of the lobby, resplendent in his canary-yellow ABC blazer while brandishing a huge cigar.

I walked over to him as unobtrusively as I could and tried to introduce myself to the ‘great man.’ Cosell looked at me with an annoyed expression on his face, as if I were some bothersome fly.

When I asked him if he might let me do a tape interview with him, he said: “Do you work for the A B C (emphasizing each letter with the typical Cosell flourish,) affiliate young man?”

When I told him I did not, he then pointed to a man who was sitting across the lobby at a table, studying a sheaf of notes.

“You see that fellow? That’s Chet Forte. HE’S the man you should talk to! HE’S the genius behind Monday Night Football! He’s the wizard behind the curtain!” Cosell practically bellowed as if he were in front of a live camera.
Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell: Foils and friends,
bound by mutual respect

I ended up doing a ten minute interview with Forte and it was extremely interesting but then I told him that I could not go back to the station empty-handed, with no Cosell interview.

“Why don’t you come down with us to the Kingdome. We’re leaving in a few minutes. Howard has to record his halftime highlights and then we’ll get him to do the interview.”

A few minutes later I sitting with them in their ABC limo for the short ride to the Kingdome. When we got to the TV production trailer I followed Cosell inside and he did a perfect two and a half minute commentary/play-by-play of the previous day’s NFL highlights with no script.

He played up each highlight segment in his trademark-theatrical style:
“AND THERE, YOU SEE THE MAN THEY CALL THE ‘SNAKE,’ THE GREAT OAKLAND QUARTERBACK KEN STABLER FIRING A TD STRIKE OF 22 YARDS TO ALL LEAGUE PERFORMER, TIGHT END DAVID CASPER. RAIDERS GO ON TO WIN TO BEAT SAN DIEGO, 31-17!”

Cosell concluded the segment by snapping a stop-watch he was holding. Then he proudly proclaimed: “THERE, right on the button, young man! Exactly two and a half minutes! You see? This is how it’s done! PERFECTION!”

Cosell then paused and smiled at me.

“Young man your persistence has paid off! What can I do for you?” and we proceeded with about a ten minute taped interview.

I ran into Howard Cosell in the press box several times at Monday Night games over the next few years in New York, Oakland and San Francisco and he always was very friendly. Writers milling around nearby always seemed miffed at how Howard and I seemed to have a friendly relationship.

Cosell may have polarized America’s NFL fans but one young radio reporter was always grateful that he took the time to tell me a little bit of his story in that long-ago interview.

Women to Show Their Skills
  by John Abendroth, PGA
After five men’s U.S. Opens at The Olympic Club, it’s time for the women to show their skills on the famed Lake Course on June 3-6.

I’ve said often that Northern California has a deep history and tradition to rival any part of the Unites States. In regards to the women’s history, there are four past U.S. Women’s Open champions with major ties to Northern California.

Michelle Wie and Patty Sheehan were attracted to the area to play college golf. Wie now lives in San Francisco and will be in the field for the 2021 US Women’s open at The Olympic Club, coming out of retirement after getting married and having a child.

Paula Creamer and Juli Inkster, both Women’s Open champions are true natives having been born in Northern California. Paula Creamer was granted a special invitation to participate this year and is coming off a rest period after wrist surgery in 2017. Juli, who is now 60 years old, tried to qualify at Half Moon Bay Golf Links but was not successful.

Creamer is quoted as saying, “Growing up in Northern California, one of my fondest memories was attending the 1998 U.S. Open at The Olympic Club with my father which truly sparked my love for USGA championships and the complete test they present to the players.”

Paula grew up in Pleasanton and would go on to win 10 LPGA events, the U.S. Women’s Open in 2010, was Rookie of the Year in 2005 and would go on to play in seven Solheim cups. After wrist surgery in 2017, she is back playing and it will be exciting to see her at The Olympic Club, knowing her inspiration and local history.

The LPGA tour has been known for young stars and there are several who are natives of the area. Danielle Kang born in San Francisco leads this pack with LPGA wins; Yealimi Noh, 18-year-old Luci Li and 16-year-old Jaclyn LaHa are from the East Bay.

One player especially to watch of the teen brigade is 19-year-old Rachel Heck a freshman attending Stanford who recently won the individual NCAA title. Hack led Stanford to the medal play victory and was awarded the Annika Award for being the top collegiate golfer of the year.

The golf course is in pristine shape, the small greens will be tricky to read correctly and surrounded by deep, difficult bunkers in most cases. This will put a premium on hitting the tight fairways and avoiding the beautiful trees. One observation I heard was that the rough will be possibly tougher than the normal USGA setup as the women are known as excellent drivers of the ball, so with the long rough they will find it tough should they find the rough.

So on Sunday, June 6, 2021 a woman will be entered into the history books as a USGA Champion at The Olympic Club, along with Billy Casper, Jack Fleck, Lee Janzen, Scott Simpson and Webb Simpson. It will be exciting to watch.

José Canseco's Showtime Car Wash in Las Vegas

by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
For a couple of years now, Mr. 40-40/MVP José Canseco’s name has been on his Car Wash operation in Las Vegas. José has done many things after his 17-year career in MLB (which most of us who covered him with the A’s believed was on the way to the Hall of Fame).

Canseco has done reality television shows, wrestled strange things in the boxing ring and other “out of the ordinary” stuff, too many to mention, including a couple of books about steroids. But now he can be seen at the Showtime Car Wash in Las Vegas on Tropicana Avenue.

It's a place where you can have your car hand-washed or detailed and even get an autograph from the slugger and half of the Bash Brothers during the A’s most recent glory years. Canseco is not there all the time but on specific days of the week.

Canseco was signing autographs at a hotel in Las Vegas the last time I visited. Some signings are at the regular baseball memorabilia shows which travel around the country as well as in Las Vegas which is one of the big entertainment centers of the world, home to the Oakland Raiders and could be the future home of the Oakland Athletics. If the A’s relocate to Vegas, Canseco can always say, “I was here first."

Hoping for a healthy Memorial Day weekend.

It's interesting. Did you know that there have been only 18 instances of two teams from the four major U.S. sports, MLB, NHL, NFL and the NBA, pulling down championships for the same area in the same season?

The most recent is the (NFL) Buccaneers and the (NHL) Lightning for Tampa Bay. If the (MLB) Tampa Bay Rays had beaten the Los Angeles Dodgers, it would have resulted in the only time one area had won 3 of 4 of the major championships in one season.

My favorite pairing for same season championships in the same city is the 'Cinderella' New York Mets and Joe Namath's New York Jets, in 1969.

With that said, only one area has had four teams competing in the finals of the four major sports in the same season. Sadly, three of the four teams lost. What area are we asking about? Hint: It is not New York.

Quakes enter two-week match break before facing Austin FC on June 19

CARSON, Calif. -  The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the LA Galaxy 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Dignity Health Sports Park. Defender Tommy Thompson, who made his 150th career appearance for San Jose, became the first Homegrown Player in club history to wear the captain's armband.

After a scoreless first half, LA got on the board in the 70th minute after a cross from Samuel Grandsir bounced off Tanner Beason and rolled passed JT Marcinkowski's goal. San Jose would respond with nine shots but could not find the equalizer.

The Earthquakes are now off for two weeks before traveling to face Austin FC in the first-ever match at Q2 Stadium on Saturday, June 19. The match kicks off at 6:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast nationally on UniMás, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

GAME NOTES
The Earthquakes now hold a 3-5-0 record (9 pts.) during the 2021 MLS regular season and are currently in seventh place in the Western Conference.

San Jose now holds a 6-3-2 record in their last 11 matches vs. the LA Galaxy.

Earthquakes defender Tommy Thompson made his 150th career appearance for San Jose, becoming the ninth player in club history to reach that milestone. Thompson also wore the captain's armband for the first time with the Quakes, becoming the first Homegrown Player in club history to earn the opportunity.

Earthquakes midfielder Shea Salinas made his 300th career appearance for San Jose, entering as a substitute in the 51st minute. Salinas becomes the second player in club history to reach that mark.

Midfielder Judson made his first start of the 2021 season, playing 90 minutes. It also marked his first regular season start since Nov. 8, 2020.

Cal catcher Cole Elvis watches his solo home run sail over the fence in the second inning, tying the score at 1-1. Cal would lose a 6-5 decision to the
No. 10 visiting Ducks and finish 15-15 in Pac-12 play, in seventh place.
Cal designated hitter Jag Burden dives across home plate in the third inning, tying the score at 2-2 on a RBI by Nathan Martorella. Cal rallied to tie or take the lead three different times but Oregon scored two late runs which Cal could not overcome. Caption and photo by Ron Sellers.
Senior Quentin Selma connects for his 14th homer of the season (and third in the last three games) in the ninth inning, as Cal rallied to within one run. With the loss, Cal now awaits the NCAA's postseason Selection Show, scheduled for 9 a.m. PDT Monday on ESPN2. If selected, Cal would be an at-large bid in the 64-team NCAA Regional field. Sonoma Raceway
FOX NASCAR Announcer Mike Joy to Join Historic Trans Am Field at Sonoma Raceway

SONOMA, Calif. (May 26, 2021) - Lead race announcer for FOX NASCAR Mike Joy will trade his microphone for the steering wheel when he competes in the Historic Trans Am Series at Sonoma Raceway, June 5-6. The series is paired with the ARCA Menards Series West on Saturday and the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday.

Joy will take to the track in the No. 89 1966 Ford Mustang built and raced by Jim Whelan and Pete Dock. They primarily raced in SCCA's A Sedan amateur road races, but also occasionally competed in the Trans Am series against larger, better-funded teams and world-class drivers. The car is owned by Ken Epsman of Saratoga and prepared by McGee Motorsports at Sonoma Raceway; Joy raced it previously in the Monterey Historics and won an Historic Trans Am race in the rain at Lime Rock.

"While I love broadcasting the NASCAR Cup Series each week for FOX Sports, my heart is with the great Historic Trans Am racers that I followed in 1966-72," said Joy. "That these exact cars have been so lovingly restored AND are being raced hard today is simply amazing. This adds a great 'throwback' aspect to Sonoma's NASCAR weekend, and I'm very honored Ken has asked me to run the car."

The Historic Trans Am Series hits the track on Saturday morning with practice beginning at 9 a.m., qualifying at 10:30 a.m. and a 30-minute timed race at
1 p.m. Sunday’s Historic Trans Am action will kick off with warm up laps at
9:15 a.m. followed by another 30-minute feature at 10:30 a.m. prior to the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Cup Series main event at 1 p.m. These are real Trans Am race cars – not reproductions – racing and competing 50 years after the series’ heyday in the late 1960s and early ‘70s.

"Fans of NASCAR and all types of sports car racing will love seeing and hearing these ground-pounders in wheel-to-wheel action,” continued Joy.

Other significant Trans Am cars scheduled to compete include a 1969 championship Camaro raced by Mark Donohue at then-Sears Point Raceway; a 1970 championship-winning yellow Mustang driven by Parnelli Jones; a lime green Dodge Challenger raced by Sam Posey and a 1972 championship-winning AMC Javelin driven by George Follmer.

NASCAR returns to Sonoma Raceway, June 5-6. Limited tickets and camping remain for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 weekend.

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca Lowers Ticket Prices, Increases Excitement for 2021

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is thrilled to welcome fans back to its picturesque track and Laguna Seca Recreation Area. While the facility is following all CDC and local health and safety guidelines, it is pleased to announce that the roar of fans will return this summer – and ticket prices are more affordable.

While the action on the track will be the usual edge-of-your-seat entertainment, getting into the facility will look a little bit different in 2021. Guests are asked to purchase tickets prior to arrival, as admission ticket scanning will be contactless. This means fans are strongly encouraged to either print their tickets at home (info here), or save them digitally to their phone’s wallet (info here), as cell service is in high demand on event days. Additionally, contactless payment methods are preferred for purchases throughout the event.

The first two big events on the 2021 schedule are the GEICO Motorcycle MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest at Monterey, July 9-11, and the AHRMA Classic MotoFest of Monterey, July 16-18. Both will feature one-day passes starting as low as $20. A three-day pass for MotoAmerica starts at just $70, a 26 percent drop from 2019 prices.

Tickets for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, Aug. 12-15, start as low as $25 for a Thursday day pass – a 37 percent decrease from 2019 – while 2-day, 3-day and 4-day passes have also decreased between 8-20 percent from two years ago.

The Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey, featuring the top stars of the INDYCAR series, will take place Sept. 17-19. A Friday day pass starts as low as $20, while 2-day and 3-day passes have also seen a decrease in cost.

“As we emerge from the pandemic, and an extremely trying time financially for all Americans over the past year, it is important for us to make the one-of-a-kind experience of an event at our historic venue more affordable,” said John Narigi, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “We can’t wait to see race fans in the grandstands again, roaming the paddock and marketplace, and campers filling our stunning backdrops.”

Those wanting to camp at the gorgeous Laguna Seca Recreation Area will find prices have dropped in a big way since 2019. Camp site prices for the INDYCAR event are a minimum of 20 percent lower in 2021, with a reserved 4-night plan dropping 35 percent in price – but with the same great camping experience.

The Monterey Pre-Reunion, Aug. 7-8, and the Hyundai Monterey Sports Car Championship, Sept. 10-12, also have reduced ticket and camping prices.

The 2021 season pass will include general admission, featuring paddock access, open grandstand seating and general parking for the INDYCAR, MotoAmerica, Pre-Reunion, Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and the Velocity Invitational. A value of more than $600, the 2021 season pass is available for only $399. Monterey County residents save even further, with 2021 season passes offered for a preferred price of $299.

The State of California is expected to no longer require physical distancing or capacity limits and to be fully opened on June 15. Laguna Seca Recreation Area management will continue to monitor and adapt to current CDC requirements.

There’s never been a better time to get outside, take in some fresh air and sunshine, and see some heart-pounding racing action. Tickets for all events, including current COVID-19 protocols, can be found here. To book event camping sites, click here.

Citizens Bank Park

Philadelphia is the only city to have all four major sports teams (MLB's Phillies, NBA's 76ers, NFL's Eagles, and NHL's Flyers)
play in their respective championship game or series in the same season (1980), though only one of the four (Phillies) actually won the championship.

The Tampa Bay area, which does not have an NBA team, had all three of its major sports teams (MLB's Rays, NFL's Buccaneers, and NHL's Lightning) play in their respective championships in the 2020 season, with the Lightning and Buccaneers winning the championships. https://bit.ly/3yQ3Gdt (Wikipedia entry)
